Review: Maria's Greek Taverna {Cardiff Restaurants/Food and Drink}

I've never been to Greece, nor had I ever even been to a Greek restaurant until this year. So I was even more excited about eating out than usual when I set off on a sunny walk with my friend Soph to try out Maria's Greek Taverna, on Crwys Road in Cardiff.

I know that cooking and eating are a huge part of Greek culture, especially embracing the concept of sharing food with family and friends. Meal times are a relaxed, social affair and this was present in the atmosphere - by half past 6 the restaurant was buzzing, filled with groups of friends catching up.

Maria's two sons opened this restaurant with the idea of having the main dishes based on traditional Greek recipes Maria has always cooked for the family. "I bet those are real family photos in the frames" I said to Soph, who wasn't entirely convinced. I was pleased to be proved right as later on we got talking to a few of the people behind this charming, family-run restaurant, including the lovely Rosa, Maria's sister, and Maria herself. The experience of dining out is just as important as the food and, though the food was incredible, in this instance we really loved that they took the time to chat to the tables and you felt very at home, as if you’d been invited around personally for tea.

The 'notes' app on my phone was whipped out so I could make a properly organised list of which dishes to pick (it was difficult to find the menu online, so I’ll pop it here for anyone else who’s curious). In agreement that it was a very strong menu and we wished we could have everything, we decided to choose a diverse array of dishes from the meze list. (We went in the evening but it's worth noting that between 12 and 6pm, 3 dishes from the meze menu are £12, a pretty decent deal).

halloumi at marias greek taverna cardiff
Halloumi Fries served with honey and fresh mint (£5.00)

Whenever halloumi is on the menu, Soph and I are like vultures - I can't imagine us ever bypassing an opportunity for some hot, fried cheese. Dripping with honey, it was perfectly cooked with a hint of mint and a touch of sweetness.

Saganaki Garides - Tiger prawns cooked in a herby, spicy tomato sauce with ouzo and crumbled feta (£6.90)

Prawns were huge and juicy, with crumbled feta and a delicious tomato sauce.

Kolokithokeftedes - Courgette and potato cake corn fritters served with a tahini and butternut squash puree (£4.90)

Spetsofai - Spicy greek sausage with peppers, in a rich red wine and tomato sauce (£6.50)

When choosing little dishes I often make the mistake of choosing only dry ones, so along with the prawns I needed a couple of saucier options. This was a great choice - rich, flavoursome tomato and pepper sauce, paired with meaty traditional Greek sausages.

Croketes Bakaliaro - Beer battered salt cod fritters, served with a potato and garlic pure and crispy leeks (£4.90)

This one was a little too salty for us, so it would be the least favourite for that reason. Didn't stop me from eating most of it though.

Papoutsakia - Baked aubergines stuffed with a lamb ragu, topped with a creamy bechamel sauce (£5.50)

Basically like a rich, hearty moussaka with out any potato, this was a favourite for us both.

Spanakokroketes - Creamy spinach and feta croquettes with a lemon and dill yoghurt dip (£5.50)

We were so very full by this point, but Maria popped over to our table to let us know a fresh batch of the spinach and feta croquettes had been made. Of course we couldn't resist trying one each (it was lovely that she remembered we wanted them too!).

Tiropitakia - Mini feta cheese pies, wrapped in crispy filo pasty (£4.90)
Tzatziki - Yoghurt and cucumber dip, served with pitta bread (£3.95)

My second favourite dish was the feta cheese pies, I can't believe I didn't get a nice big photo of them close up and showing the inside. They were incredibly moreish and I kept going back for more even though I was stuffed.

Between two people, we could have perhaps cut out the tzatziki, pitta bread and maybe the salt cod fritters and we would still have had more than enough food. My eyes are always bigger than my stomach. I definitely want to go back and try the big dishes in the main menu. The evening really made an impression on us, it was such a laid back yet lively atmosphere and made me want to book a flight to Greece ASAP. To get such a nice vibe like Maria's has along with wonderful food is really hard to come by. I urge you to give this restaurant a try if you haven’t and let me know what you think, I can’t imagine anyone coming back with anything other than a glowing review!

(Soph has been back since, booking through the First Table website - where you can get 50% off the early evening tables, all the details are on firsttable.co.uk if you're interested. Maria's also have a deal on the Wriggle app - use my code YITPVI for £5 free credit towards your first order.)

Address: 68 Crwys Rd, Cardiff CF24 4NP

Disclosure: I was invited to sample the menu, food was complimentary but all opinions are my own.

  2. I have a course to complete in Greece due to which I stayed there for 11 months; I got my long terms study Greece visa. The best experience I remember is the food, Greece has awesome and mouth-watering taste in the street food. The worst memory I captured were the initial steps of getting a Greece visa. I would prefer everybody to apply through agency as it is very hard to get a schengen visa through the official websites. I would also like to share my experience once I come back to UK I will also share my blogs that I have made here for helping student travelers like me.

Review: Wicked at the Wales Millennium Centre (October 2024)

It has been about 10 years since I first saw Wicked at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff and I was almost a bit nervous going in – could it live up to the hype and memory I had in my head of how good it was?! Well, it not only lived up to it but went above and beyond, sweeping me up for an evening into a spellbinding world of magic, music and friendship.   The Surprising Backstory of the Famous Witches of Oz… Wicked reimagines Gregory Maguire’s novel (based on L. Frank Baum’s classic) making us question everything we thought we knew about heroes, villains, and what it means to be truly “wicked”. The show tells the untold story of Elphaba (the so-called “Wicked Witch of the West”) and her surprising friendship with Glinda the Good. Set long before Dorothy arrives, the show takes us to their university days, where two young women – one misunderstood and fierce, the other bubbly and adored – meet and form an unlikely bond. Through their choices and challenges, the story qu...

Review: The Bodyguard at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff

Review: The Bodyguard at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff {Cardiff Theatre and Shows} Exploding on to the stage with a bang (literally...me and my friend Bran nearly jumped out of our skin..you'll see what I mean if you go), The Bodyguard opens with a magnificent performance from Alexandra Burke as Rachel Marron. With some seriously impressive stage presence, Burke establishes instantly that Rachel is a superstar, an icon, a diva; you feel like you've been dropped in the thick of it at a big stadium gig. I've never seen the original 1992 film of the Bodyguard with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, nor had I read into how they adapted it to the stage. I thought the only song I'd recognise was 'I Will Always Love You', so I was beyond ecstatic to read through the track listing and see I knew and adored every single song. "How Will I Know", "One Moment in Time", "So Emotional", "I Wanna Dance With Somebody"...all...

Review: Ghost at the Wales Millennium Centre (March 2025)

Press night & review of Ghost the Musical at the WMC!  Ooh this was a surprise, had no idea it was in Cardiff this year! The show is running until 8th March and there are still seats available online :D The story is a very good one and I actually forgot how many funny bits there were in the film alongside all the heart-wrenching moments! The perfect mix of romance, suspense and supernatural intrigue, here's the plot in case you aren't familiar with it: 𝙒𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, 𝙖 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙨 𝙎𝙖𝙢 𝙢𝙪𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚, 𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙩.
